Photographer Erin White, in collaboration with a group of courageous breastfeeding mothers, embarked on a mission to challenge societal norms surrounding breastfeeding. Inspired by Stephanie Karr Studios, they aimed to normalize breastfeeding and combat the shame often associated with postpartum bodies. This initiative began in Kaiserslautern, Germany, where White, prompted by the local breastfeeding community, volunteered to capture a group nursing photo. The photo shoot became a space for mothers to share their personal stories of breastfeeding, body image, and loss.
Titled “Women in the Wild,” the project initially featured the Kaiserslautern mothers but expanded to include 51 mothers from around the world. Erin White, with the collaboration of Liliana Taboas and Megan Flanagan, not only photographed the mothers but also included their stories with the images. The response to the project was overwhelming, with an outpouring of emotional emails and comments from mothers globally.
Erin White’s dedication to capturing the raw beauty of breastfeeding mothers stems from her desire to challenge societal expectations and empower women to embrace their postpartum bodies. The collaboration with Liliana Taboas and Megan Flanagan allowed the project to transcend geographical boundaries, creating a diverse and inclusive representation of breastfeeding experiences.
The project, “Women in the Wild,” serves as a powerful visual narrative, breaking down stereotypes and fostering a sense of community among mothers. The images not only showcase the physical act of breastfeeding but also capture the emotional journey mothers go through, addressing body image concerns and the struggles of loss. Each photograph tells a unique story, celebrating the strength and resilience of mothers from various backgrounds.
The global impact of the project is evident in the numerous heartfelt emails and comments received from mothers who found solace and inspiration in the shared stories. The initiative not only encourages open conversations about breastfeeding but also emphasizes the importance of supporting mothers in their individual journeys.
Erin White’s commitment to changing societal perceptions surrounding breastfeeding has not only created a stunning collection of photographs but has also sparked a movement towards acceptance and understanding. “Women in the Wild” continues to resonate with mothers worldwide, fostering a sense of unity and empowerment. As the project expands, it has the potential to influence positive change in how society views and embraces the natural and beautiful act of breastfeeding.
